As for his debt, Alexius paid half of what he had promised, but couldn’t raise enough money for the rest. Several more instances of guile and political intrigue would follow from the Byzantine camp until the crusaders finally had enough and decided to take what they couldn’t get through diplomacy, by means of war. The crusaders sacked Constantinople, the city that they had previously pledged to protect.

The pope, of course, was not too happy when he heard about all this, but being several miles away in the Vatican, it was impossible for him to intervene. In the end, the Fourth Crusade was a sad and twisted affair for all those involved. More concerned with financial gain, than anything else, these crusaders never even set foot in the Holy Land. All they really managed to do was weaken the greatest bulwark of Christianity in the Middle East, and pave the way for a complete Islamic takeover in the very near future.
